Hi , I am Val Griffith-Jones and I invite you to join me for a sailing holiday on the Queen Charlotte Sound. I have adventured in the Sounds for many years with family and friends, and more recently as sailing skipper and walking guide. I hold a Local Launch Operator Certificate, (LLO) and have much experience introducing people to sailing

The Queen Charlotte Sound is situated at the northern tip of the South island of New Zealand. It is recognized as an exceptional cruising ground, and offers access to The Queen Charlotte Walking Track and historical sites of Capt. James Cook’s Voyages

You will be

  • Exploring delightful bays, inlets and islands.

  • Enjoying lots of hands on experience running the yacht

  • Learning, or extending sailing and cruising skills

  • Living on board and mooring in safe anchorage's over night.

  • Setting the pace and planning the days, there is no set itinerary

About the Yachts

My LLO allows me to use 5 yachts from the Compass Charter Fleet. These yachts are maintained to the Maritime Dept high standards, are very comfortable and well appointed.

These trips are suitable for absolute beginners, through to people who wish to gain confidence to Charter themselves. Crews of all ages, families, work friends and social groups have all enjoyed these trips.

I offer Learn to Sail trips where the focus is on improving your sailing and cruising skills.

And I offer crusising trips where the focus is on exploring the Sounds. You help me work the yacht.

Cost includes yacht hire, skipper, food & snacks, fuel & linen.
  • Self Catering

On this scheme you charter the yacht that best fits your needs, please visit Compass Charters for details of number of berths and rates. The skipper fee is $250 per day and additional costs are fuel used, providing your own linen and food for the crew.

As an indication yacht charter and skipper fee can be as low as $108 per person per day in the low season.
